Petition Request-Covid19 and employment

From MS Society With shielding set to be paused in all four nations of the UK in August, we want the UK Government to support people with MS who can’t safely go back to work. We’re campaigning with Age UK, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and 9 other charities. Together, we’re calling for the furlough scheme to be extended beyond August for people who are most vulnerable to Covid-19 and can’t safely return to work. We need as many signatures as possible. Will you join us? Sign the petition at https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/330279 Since the start of lockdown, many people with MS have been shielding, which has meant limiting time outside and their contact with others. And we know some people are still more vulnerable to Covid-19. Let’s make sure no one has to choose between their job and their health. >> Please sign the petition. Thank you for your support,

Thanks for sharing @hope33. I agree people who cannot safely return to work should not have to choose between their job and their health. I'd go so far as to say if you can work ok from home, even if you could (in theory) safely return to the workplace, you should have the option to continue home working. But I'm confused by this petition. The furlough scheme doesn't end when shielding is paused - it's due to continue until October (although there is a gradual tapering process of employers having to contribute more). The guidance is clear that if you have an employee who cannot safely return to work, they should be placed on furlough. Personally I'm more concerned about employers (and indeed the government) declaring a workplace is "covid compliant" and safe, when in reality it is not, or at least the individual does not feel it is.
