Medication shortages – Pain relief

‘companies which supply the UK are looking elsewhere for more economically favourable places to sell, since our decision to leave the EU.’ Not good is it? I’m running short of my own medication-gabapentin, slightly apprehensive of what may come. I might self-medicate. Any ideas?

Seriously, I’m really surprised this isn’t making more headlines. Brexit will impact MSers and others with long term chronic conditions.

@samuelmanual , this may just be scare-mongering. The country will be in uproar if that happened.

@stumbler well, I’ve two day’s supplies left. I got an email from the pharmacy telling me of the supply issues. Others in the region experiencing the same. Scaremongering? I don’t think so…

Which region are you in. I picked my gabapentin up today

@samuelmanual I have gabapentin & worked extremely well for me but then gave me stomach cramps, bloating, gas (sorry to sound so graphic) & have been looking if there is any thing that would give me the relief gabapentin does w/o side effects. @stumbler also if you know?

@lilyc , you could give Pregabelen a try. It’s a similar medication.

@stumbler , Pregabalen (Lyrica) is a Controlled Substance in the U.S. Just looked it up. I will ask my Neuro though. They have a delayed release brand. Thanks.

Latest response from the pharmacy,

We’re having trouble getting hold of the following medication (Gabapentin). We’re in touch with our supplier and hope to have this item back in stock soon, but can’t currently estimate the dispatch date.

I’m in the US so doubt we have the same issue but I moved over to Gralise which is an extended release version of the drug and I understand is more expensive but maybe is more available?

@samuelmanual , we haven’t actually left the European Union yet, so this problem can’t be associated with Brexit. It’s more likely to have been caused by human error/mismanagement.

To be fair @samuelmanual and @stumbler, my meds are only delivered when I am running out. However, before the fake Brexit in March,be ploughed and when we left in Jan, the companies were suddenly happy to let me have two months supply, so I think there is genuine uncertainty. But not to worry, right? Mr Johnson told us all that the money Brexit saves will be ploughed into the NHS, remember? (NOT!)

But I agree with Stumbler, there would be uproar if we were denied meds to the detriment of our health…..
