Ignoring shielding letter

Hi everyone, I hope you are keeping well! So a bit of background, I’m a nurse usually working on an acute surgical ward. I’ve been off for almost 6 weeks on the advice of my MS team, awaiting the outcome of a risk assessment by work as to whether it is safe for me to be at work. In the meantime, I have received a shielding letter, much to my surprise. I’m on Tecfidera and everything I have read says Tecfidera doesn’t increase the risk of infection significantly. I asked my MS nurse about it who was initially also confused about why I received it but a week later clarified that it’s because of the Tecfidera which has the potential to be immunosuppressive, however my lymphocytes have always been perfect while on it. According to the national guidelines and advice from the MS society and the Association of British Neurologists, Tecfidera does not qualify for shielding advice. Even so, I let work know I’d received it. I finally had the result of my risk assessment today, they have decided it is safe for me to be at work, despite the shielding letter. Based on all the national guidelines I have already mentioned, I am actually in agreement with this and think my MS team are being over cautious recommending I shield. But, I feel so uneasy just ignoring their advice and the shielding letter! I’m desperate to go back to work but I’m worried this is clouding my judgement. My gut is telling me I’m safe and should be at work, but a small part of me just can’t bring myself to ignore the letter. What do you all think?? I am so confused!! I know no one here can give me an answer but I just needed to vent and get my thoughts out there!

I'm in Scotland and was awaiting a letter, I eventually called my GP and he stated following advice from neurology people on Tecfidera were not thought of as high risk enough to shield. However I am going to be working from home, so I as is my husband and the kids will be off until Aug. We only leave the house to pick up the click and collect shopping and go for a walk. So we are pretty much shielding anyway. Hope this helps.

Hi You’ve followed you head and done your research which says safe to work so you can now follow your head and go to work. I think in the early days there was quite confusing advice about the DMTs and as the GP service has helped draw up the lists it’s probs how you got on it. Wishing you good health and thank you. I am glad people are clapping you but it would be better if you were paid and resourced properly. 🌈✨ hoping for better days to come xx
