Got my new cane!

I just got my new cane today! Its silver-plated with a dragon head for a handle with a blue “gem” in its mouth. Totally badass! I want to post a pic of it on here, but idk how to do it? Can anyone help?

Yesterday was pretty rough. 😞 I had a violent shaking spell while taking a bath, been having shortness of breath for awhile that I thought was my asthma but now I’m starting to think it’s MS-related, I couldn’t remember ANYTHING, my daughter had to help me dress after my bath then help me walk to the couch, I had a bad headache, was VERY tired, dizzy, and my legs felt like rubber! I slept off and on all day.

@arica_therrien , nice stick. Unfortunately, the Forum doesn’t support the posting of pictures. If you were to post on the internet, you could post a link……..

Be wary of hot baths. Anything which causes our body temperature to increase is likely to emphasise our symptoms – https://www.mstrust.org.uk/a-z/uhthoffs-phenomenon .

I got mine too! I made some and my father kindly did the rest. I didn’t want the NHS style one. Not v. aesthetically pleasing!

I took a different approach to yours (sounds cool btw) and bought a 16mm cross-weave carbon tube, cut to length, from a supplier to the F1 teams, a 4 pack of rubber ferrules for the foot and the handle was made from False Acacia.

Like @stumbler says, even warm baths are no fun at all. In the old days taking a hot bath was one of the diagnostic tests for MS!

I did read somewhere that MS patients are not to take hot baths. I had forgotten and man, was I suffering afterwards! I felt awful. So what kind of baths are we to take? Luke-warm? I don’t trust my legs to support me in a shower anymore.

@dominics

That sounds like a nice cane, and to make it yourself is very creative! I will need to get a larger rubber tip for mine, and my husband said he will use strong glue between the 2 pieces to keep it from unscrewing. Otherwise, it helps pretty well.

That is weird they would use hot baths to determine MS in the old days. Like I told stumbler, I don’t trust my legs to hold me up in the shower, so I’ll be sure to use cooler water. I felt so lousy after my bath yesterday! All of this is coming onto me so suddenly and fast, and very overpowering! I feel like I’m getting worse by the day. πŸ™

Have you thought of using a specialist chair/stool type thing for the shower? A mat so you don’t slip too easily and there are neat handles that suction to the wall tiles.

It might beat a tepid bath!

@arica_therrien , I’m afraid that link won’t work as it’s a photo on your Facebook, which is restricted to your Friends only…..

Is it something like this :- https://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/MTIwMFgxMjAw/z/tlkAAOSwHglb552a/$_35.JPG?set_id=880000500F

I’m with @dominics about resolving your showering problems.

I haven’t had a bath or a heated rice bag on my neck since I was diagnosed 11 years ago. My neuro told me not to, I didn’t quite realize what the problems was with baths until I had a relapse. I had woken up to the right side of my body being numb, after a couple of days I decided I could take a shower. The water was only slightly warm but after a few minutes the right side went numb again. I manage to get out of the shower and make it to my bed, I decided to see my neuro. He gave me some steroids and they helped a lot but I had to take sponge baths for a month and cold showers for two months. I am still careful to keep the shower on the cooler side . Potter

@stumbler Yes, that’s exactly what my cane looks like!

I agree with dominics as well. Those are good ideas!

arica_therrien

@dominics That’s a good idea. I never thought of using a stool or even sitting on a mat. This is all so new to me,I feel completely clueless. I’ll have to look into getting something, and definitely make sure I keep the water at a decent temperature.

It’s insane that I no more than get “diagnosed”, and EVERYTHING is hitting me full force all at once!

@potter I can’t handle being cold. It makes my athritis in my back flare up. Winters are HORRIBLE! July’s here in Michigan are unbearable with the heat, and August isn’t much better. Spring and Fall are comfortable for me.

As for water temperature, I guess it’ll be touch and go until I find the right temperature that won’t make me feel so awful like yesterday. Sponge baths might not be a bad idea for starters.

Having this massive dose of information at once is what I refer to as having to ‘drink from the firehose’.

It is overwhelming. Don’t let it worry you. The super important things will be looked out for. It is like learning to drive Nascar in a week, when you have never sat in a car before.

@arica_therien, I have a foldable plastic stool I keep in the shower. I set it up before I shower, then, if I feel dizzy, it’s right there.
I also have six different canes (sticks to the Brits) so I can be fashionable AND not fall down.

@dominics “Drinking water from a firehose” is a very good way to describe it! At first you’re not expecting it, then BOOM! It comes gushing out all at once! I would definitely love to sit in a NASCAR car as I love watching NASCAR (go Dale Jr! 😁 Too bad he’s retired now. I still mourn his father.😞) But I will not drive one lol well… maybe πŸ€” lol just kidding!

But in all seriousness, yes, this is definitely a LOT to take in all at once!

@rivka I’m definitely going to put a chair or stool in the upstairs shower, even though it’s a pain trying to walk upstairs, or the downstairs shower/bath tub. I don’t want to fall.

I will probably get another cane or 2. My husband doesn’t like the dragon one I have even though I love it. Lol

Wow @arica_therrien your cane looks amazing it’s so good that things like that are easily available online now instead of waiting months for a standard nhs one. I just ordered a foldable walking cane, I kept thinking for months β€œ I don’t need one” but a have the bruises and scrapes to show lol

@chezn87 Oh ouch! So sorry to hear you got hurt! I keep falling or losing my balance, and I started losing my balance several months ago. I have a headache EVERY SINGLE DAY which definitely doesn’t help! So I felt it best to get a cane right away. My daughter’s graduation party is this weekend and there’s no I’m going to embarrass myself by falling on my face in front of everyone! I just need a rubber foot for my cane to make it a little more sturdy.

@highlander Haha! “Captain Caaaavemaaaan!” “And son!” I used to watch that cartoon all the time, with the “Flintstone Kids”. Ah, Saturday morning cartoons before cable TV, how I miss thee! lol
