Going abroad

Hi, just wondered since being diagnosed how people's experiences of going abroad have changed. Does insurance go sky high for example? Love going on holiday and hoping I can still go every now and then. Thanks

@Tash41 , this is all so new to you, but it's worthwhile spotting these little problems in advance. Yes, travel insurance premiums will be a bit more expensive, as the Insurers feel that you are at a greater risk of making a medical claim. You just need to shop around for the best deal. Always consider giving the MS Society Helpline (0808 800 8000) with questions of this nature as they should be able to provide an answer. If you are a driver, Car Insurance Premiums should NOT increase. But you should have advised the DVLA of your diagnosis, this is a legal requirement. They don't stop you driving, but will ask you to complete some paperwork that allows them to consult with your Neuro and GP. Ultimately, they'll probably put you on a 3 year renewal, so they can monitor you. These renewals shouldn't cost. So, going back to your car insurance, you do need to tell them too, but they will only be interested in whether you have told the DVLA. Any new proposals for life and health insurance would be subject to higher premiums, although any existing policies will be unaffected. The MS Trust issue a range of publications for the newly diagnosed. You can view them, or obtain hard copies here :- http://www.mstrust.org.uk/shop/products.jsp?catid=56

@Jdd0310

I told my travel insurance company about my ms and they weren't at all interested, it made not difference to my payments. I have been away three times since my diagnosis and I have been looked after very well, taking shortcuts around the airport and avoiding the long queues. I have my own fold up electric buggy and I've been very well looked after. So far, everything has been very positive. Good luck.
