Glaucoma and MS
Hello! I think I need advice from someone a bit more experienced than me. Does any of you have both glaucoma and MS? How do you get it diagnosed? After my recent optic neuritis (in march) my optician suggested a week ago that I might have glaucoma, but that she is not certain, as it damages nerves in similar way to multiple sclerosis and my eye pressure is quite high, but not all the time. She asked me to wait 8 months to see if anything will change. I agreed, but I woke up today with massive eye pain. It felt as if someone hit me in the eye and tried to push it out of my eye socket from behind at once. Called my GP, he said that I should have it checked at the hospital. I'm afraid that they will yet again say that it might be MS, and they can't do anything about it.
@ryba I don’t have glaucoma but optic neuritis was my first MS symptom 20 years ago. I then developed chronic uveitis about a year later which was eyeball pain / like a headache in my eye if that makes sense especially when I moved my eye. My eyeball also felt ‘bulgy’. I’ve been using Maxidex (dexamethasone) eyedrops ever since and now have slow-release steroid implants in both eyes to treat cystoid macular oedema (caused by uveitis). About 25% of MSers have uveitis, so I’m slightly wondering if that is what you have. Whether it’s glaucoma or uveitis there are things that ophthalmologists can do, but you need to see someone asap So I’d do what your GP says and get yourself to an eye hospital as soon as possible. Opticians aren't trained to spot everything and they don’t have all the specialised equipment... Good luck
@ryba , whether it's MS or Glaucoma, you need to try and avoid the damage to your optic nerves. So, don't worry yourself into further damage. The Glaucoma risk can be mitigated by regular eye checks, including the pressure test.
