Driving changes

Hello, I have very recently been diagnosed with MS (In the last 2 weeks) and I won’t be seeing a nurse for a while, for obvious reasons. Could anyone let me know what I need to do about the DVLA and driving insurance? I don’t take any medication at the moment and rarely have symptoms. Thank you 🙂

Hi Rhiannon, I am also recently diagnosed with MS and was told that you have a responsibility to inform DVLA. I also phoned my insurance company but they said they didn’t need to know that I needed to tell DVLA which I’d already done. If ever you feel like a chat just message me good luck.

I’ve found the form for DVLA and filled it in a best as I could and now have my fingers crossed. Okay, I will give my insurance company a call and see what they say. Thank you, I’m here too if you ever need a chat.

I know my neurologist had to give a report which he said I was safe to drive and he told me they review your licence every three years.
Hope it goes okay.

@hayley_criddle, so it’s best to wait until I next see my neurologist or my MS nurse and get a letter from then?

You can but I phoned DVLA to report a new illness and they sent me the form. In the form they ask for your neurologist details and they contact your neurologist.

Hi @rhiannon_cooper. Yep, we have to re-apply every 3 years. It doesn’t cost us to do this and, whilst the DVLA is processing your licence and contacting your medical team, the licence remains valid. I’ve just reapplied and received a letter from them acknowledging receipt, but saying that due to Covid…..delays…..blah blah! 🙂

Even when I was diagnosed with CIS I had to inform the dvla and they sent out forms. Then when I was actually diagnosed it worked out well because my licence was up for renewal(well a year out of date..say nothing lol) and they sent me a nice new one to be renewed in 3 years . There are pros to this…we can change our photo every 3 years 😉
