Driving after diagnosis

Hi folks 👋🏻 Hope you’re all doing well today ☺️ I’m aware that I need to inform the DVLA and my insurance company about my RRMS Diagnosis. I have downloaded the form to send off to the DVLA and I’m going to take it along to my appointment on the 9th of September to get a hand filling it out correctly. I’m looking for a few answers that I’ve not been able to find by searching through posts: 1) Should I wait until I’ve sent away my DVLA form before I contact my insurance company to let them know or is it ok to do it now? I’m with Admiral and just renewed my insurance with them at the end of July before my diagnosis in the middle of August there. And 2) Am I likely to be asked to go for a driving assessment because this is my first time having to get in contact with the DVLA about my MS? Thanks I’m advance 😉 x

Re your insurance, unless you have been advised not to drive, I would wait until you receive your licence which will probably be a 3 yr medical licence dependent on any residual problems you have. I was told by my insurance company that I just had to tell them it was now a 3 yr medical licence and did not have to specify the condition. As I had already told them when I rang, he asked permission to note it on my file but it was not essential to do so. Regarding an assessment it will again depend on your symptoms and any residual problems. Like everything in ms it is very individual.

I would definitely wait until you hear back from the DVLA. When I told my insurance company about my diagnosis when I learnt to drive they said they would note my diagnosis but it would make no difference to my insurance as long as the DVLA have said it’s ok for me to drive. I was initially given a 1 year medical licence for the 1st few years & now have a 5 year licence.
