Depression

I am struggling with depression- no energy, crying spells and severe agitation. I have been to mental health professionals, I have been prescribed various depression meds but for some reason refuse to take them. I guess I’m in denial that it is actually most likely clinical depression and maybe my MS has a lot to do with this. I am assuming some of the brain changes in MS can result in depression? I just know that my quality of life right now is very very low. I also have Anxiety and heart palpitations. I am worried about the depression meds not agreeing with me and I already feel dizzy and sick most of the time....I need some words of wisdom and experience! Thanks!

Hi- I don't feel that I get depression with my MS but know my mom struggled with it. She was actually bi-polar and maintained pretty well except when she would stop taking her meds...then she would get messed up. So-listen to the docs and try what they prescribe. If they are making you dizzy or giving you palpitations I'd make sure and let them know. This time of year can also have a tendency to bring us down due to the shorter days and, strange enough, the holidays. I like to get to somewhere where it is warm, like the indoor walks at zoos! Anything to pick up my spirits, get some warmth and some light. I try to pick funny movies or books more during the winter as well- anything to add something fun to the day- or call a friend that always makes me laugh. Hoping tomorrow is a better one...always ;-)

@angieh , having MS can become a huge burden. And MS symptoms can really make us miserable. We all need some help with our moods, from time to time. It's not a sign of weakness and can brighten up the darkest of days. So, do try these medications. You can always stop them if they don't help or disagree with you. We just need to manage the "feeling sorry for ourselves" moods. And, we have enough cause to feel that way. So, give yourself time to consider what's going on and then try to regain your perspective. There is some dark in our lives, but there is also a lot of light. Look at your daughter. You have a best friend for life there, which is a reason to be cheerful.
