Kirsty: What short term and long term effects does alcohol have on someone with MS?

Carly Gillespie, MS Nurse: The long term effects of alcohol, there isn’t really any long term effects of alcohol in terms of MS, so it doesn’t add to progression, it doesn’t cause relapses, there’s no kind of clinical implications to MS if you are just moderately drinking. If you’re on disease modifying therapy there isn’t any real interactions with alcohol in disease modifying therapies but sometimes with Tecfidera it can irritate your stomach, so if you also drink alcohol on top of that, then it might in theory affect your stomach as well, so avoiding the two at once is probably a better idea.
