Trying to enter the working society

Hello everyone,
I am new on this website and still trying to understand how to use it properly!
I am here to ask some information so I hope at least some of you can help me.. I live between Italy and United Kingdom and in march i would like to search and find a job here in UK.. Could anyone kindly tell me some of the things I should do before looking for a job and before applying?! I was diagnosed in Italy so i know how it works in Italy but have no clue about UK. Thank you in advance for reading and helping me if you can! I hope you had wonderful Christmas Holidays and celebrations!

Hi @emiliana_quaranta and welcome.

I think the best place to start would be the MS Society in both Italy and the UK :-

Hello @emiliana_quranta, my goodness you’ve picked a strange old time to come to settle in the U.K. with Brexit looming! Welcome, regardless 🙂 When you are looking for work, it would be advisable to consider MS services in specific areas. These vary a lot between areas of the country. For example, some local authorities don’t have MS nurses as part of their hospital care.so if you go for a job, check these things carefully. You can get this information from the MS Society website. What line of work are you in? Happy New Year to you 🙂

@vixen thank you for your reply, I was born in UK and have british passport do I am not worried about Brexit but I don’t understand what i should do to find a job, if i should get diagnosed in uk as well so then i could get helped to find a job, or just find myself a job not telling anyone about ms… Doubts, doubts and doubts….

@emiliana_quaranta , it would seem wise to obtain a copy of your medical records, scans, etc., so they can be passed on in the UK, as appropriate.

Primarily, you’ll need to get registered with a local GP, then referred to a Neurologist, who may accept your diagnosis. Or they may want to confirm it…….

Getting your diagnosis confirmed in the UK won’t help you get a job. If your MS is not visually evident, then you do not have to divulge this whilst applying for jobs. Whilst the law prevents employers from discriminating, the reality may be somewhat different.

Hi,

It would be helpful to know what you are trained to do or aspire to do.

Many questions – Are there professional associations that are relevant? University alumni networks? Do you need to requalify for what you do? Does your olb Italian employer have an international presence? Etc.

You are not obliged to disclose your MS voluntarily. However, if you are asked a direct question on an application form or verbally it is an offence – I think @carlaK would know – to lie. Employers are forbidden from discriminating under the law However, being realistic I can’t imagine it doesn’t happen. It has happened to me before.

Are you on LinkedIn – the professional network – at http://www.linkedin.com ?

Best,

Dominic

Welcome @emiliana_quaranta

We’ve done 2 MS Reporters about work and MS that you may find useful. Here are the links:
Series 1: https://shift.ms/ms-and-work-series-1
Series 2: https://shift.ms/ms-and-work-series-2

Its more about support once you’re in the workplace, but thought I would mention it just in case.
