Eye Pain- not optic neuritis

I had optic neuritis in my left eye in June 2014. I just had another mri which shows it’s still damaged. I saw my eye specialist yesterday who explained the mri results to me- basically it’s not going to get any better. However I get a lot of eye pain in both eyes. It’s not the same pain as ON where it hurts to move your eye, it’s just like a constant pain in the eyeball. I told specialist my good eye hurt as well but mri and his examination showed it was normal. He doesn’t know why it is painful. Has anyone else suffered this?

Does it feel as though you’ve been punched in the eye? I get that sometimes and it is as yet undiagnosed unfortunately… If you find out before me, please let me know!

@adam1407 haha I’ve never been punched in the eye so I don’t know. Ive poked myself in the eye,a million years ago, it’s probably similar to that. I described it to my doctor as feeling like I have a bruised eyeball. I see my neuro at the end of the month so I’ll see if he has any answers.

I have been diagnosed for 20 years and have had a bout of optic neuritis only twice and was told that almost everyone will experience it at least once. I recently had a visual field test which was full. That is good and have old damage from optic neuritis that hasn’t really effective my eye sight except having to use reading glasses. If it hangs on it is my feeling you should ask your neuro for some steriods because they do work for me side effects can be helpled enormously with treatment for constipation at the same time.

Thanks @juls. It’s been 6 months since my ON started and the specialist said steroids wouldn’t help because it’s now as good as it will get. Which is ok, like you it hasn’t really affected my eye sight it’s only when I cover my good eye that I notice how foggy my bad eye is.
The pain in having is not the same as with ON when my eyeball hurt to move. Now both eyes hurt without moving, it’s really weird. It’s not like a headache behind my eyes it’s actually my eyeballs. Hopefully my neuro will have an idea of why….or hopefully he won’t because that would mean it’s not ms….can only hope

I get eye ball ache in one eye often, it’s bad to the point I can only lye down and wait for it to go. I told my neuro who sent me for a test to check for any damage but both eyes were fine. He felt it was a type of migraine and nothing to do with MS. I think it is a miraine, it happens when I’m tired and have been watching TV or using the computer. But I think it is MS related as I have never had it pre MS x

Hi @aussiekylie I can’t help you with the pain side but I can relate to the foggy vision, my left eye is very foggy ever since I got punched in the side of my head approx 9 years ago. My neurologist thinks it is Ms related but not 100% sure. It can be a real pain in the arse but you live with it.

So I saw my neurologist in January and he has no answer as to why my eyes hurt….I guess this is a mystery to be lived not a problem to be solved.
@amylee I don’t think mine is migraine (I’ve had them before) I wish lying down would fix it but some days I wake up and they’re hurting. I guess it’s not the actual pain that frustrates me as its not that bad, for me I think it’s a constant reminder that optic neuritis can strike at any time and I’m paranoid about that.
@grahamjk have you seen an eye specialist or does any damage to your optic nerve show on mri?

Hi, I have something similar. I’m only recently diagnosed and haven’t yet experienced ON, but my left eye ball often feels like it’s been punched. My doctor gave me eye drops and stuff called lacrilube. It’s not on a prescription, but he said my eye needed lubricant. And you know what, he was so right! If I forget the lacrilube at night, a pain in my left eye wakes me up during the night. Sooo sore. It might be worth asking your doc if its worth a shot?

@aussiekylie I saw a consultant at my local hospital when I got punched as I lost all sight in the left eye for three weeks. I had X-rays, scans, photographs and very close inspections but they couldn’t find anything wrong apart from a slightly enlarged left optic nerve but as they had no reference to check against they couldn’t say what was wrong.

I get a dull ache in both eyes quite often. It does not hurt when I move my eyes at all. I saw my MRI and there looked to be no damage around the eye area!
