Diazepam

My gp gave me a few days ago to help my tight lower back, he thinks it may be muscle related, they are only 2mg tabs, not doing much should I take two, twice a day instead of one?? Feel like it when my back is agony.

Hi Graham

I don’t know about popping two tablets, what does the dosage state on the label/ packet? I have taken diazepam once for a bad back and it did help a little, although I did get rather spaced out.

What I find is a massive help for me when I get musclar pain in my back is Voltarol gel. You can buy it from the normal places. Also what I did also find good was a product called “deep freeze”. It was a bit like deep heat without the smell and the best bit was it only cost £1 for a small tube from my local home bargains store.

@graham100 , you can treat the symptoms, or you may want to try and find the cause.

Have you seen a Neuro-physio recently? See whether your MS Nurse can put you in touch….

Thanks for that. Tried all sorts even osteopath it just feels locked. As for nuro physio iv either been unlucky or they really are useless, two goes and they bend my legs and say keep doing that. Discharging you now?? Lol

Hi @graham100 as a fellow back pain sufferer I feel your pain..!! but I think you should follow the dosage with the diazepam in case it causes you other problems (palpitations, constipation etc) and just hope over a period of time it will be in your system and you will just be topping yourself up, would also try @ruggermad ‘s advice with the pain relief gel and something warm to help relax the tight muscles.. I have managed to book myself in for Bilateral Facet Joint injections (Cortasone) with a back surgeon and they tend to give me months of pain free-ness.. so worth pushing your doctor to be seen by a specialist 🙂 .. Good luck and best wishes

A good product is Biofreeze. The clue’s in the name! Just before going to bed, try a bath as hot as you can stand then put a thin layer of Biofreeze gel over the whole back area. Then get straight into bed and try and relax the back. They say it’s the hot-cold contrast that does the good. PS It’s not a drug but you have to wash your hands well after applying it because it’s toxic if it gets in your mouth. You should be able to get it in Boots – my physio’s practice sells it at cost so might be worth enquiring. xx

PS Re: diazepam. Don’t be surprised if the doc won’t prescribe it a second time. When I was given some for an anxiety attack, I was told that it can only be seen as a very short-term solution as the drug is addictive.

Hi @graham100 The injections gave me instant relief from my back pain but that was because just before they inject the cortasoid, they inject a pain relief which takes about a week or two to wear off.. (Strong one..) by which time the steroids are kicking in. As for the back or the MS preventing you from walking, well I would think a combination of both is not helpful. I could walk be it quite wonky and with a stick but after the injections I was better in the low back area (Had sciatica in hips and down legs and injections sorted that out) but my balance and leg weakness was still there because of my MS. So not a solve all cure but it can’t hurt to ask your doctor about the injections..!! Good luck getting it sorted and let us know how you get on.

@northernlass. Thanks for that will ask him, funny but my legs are quite good, holding the sink for balance I can do 40 squats that’s why I think back more than ms? If I can get car plus adaption so I can get out of the house by myself, I’m sure that will help too. Xx

Hi @cameron. I heard that too. But it would only be addictive to me if it worked. Lol gave up smoking so good at shaking stuff that has to be one of the most addictive things in the world. Used to enjoy a shandy and a roll up. Lol
