Breast feeding & Steroids

I’m having a bit of a relapse 5 months after having my baby, and my MS nurse has suggested I have some steroids. Can I still breast feed my baby while on steroids?

Everything that is absorbed by the mother will be excreted in to the breast milk therefore in to the baby in small amounts.

It may depend on which steriod (some are more harmful than others) and the dosage.. the GP will be able to access the BNF and pick one that is most suitable (if there is a choice, and is suitable for bf)

If you dont get any further .. and you want to.. let me know the type and amount and I can find out for you..

Hello, I had to stop breastfeeding my baby because I was given steroids. It is a very difficult decision to make and I have probably been to hard on myself because of it.
I hope you find a better answer as to if you can carry on or not, but I just wanted to say – if you have to stop, don’t give yourself a hard time over it.
My little boy is two and a half now and it hasn’t had any negative impact on him at all.
Best wishes

Esther… have spoken briefly to a few of my experienced colleagues.. who are indicating that it is not advised to take steriods and bf..

If I learn anything more spec.. I will get back to you.. remember you need to be as healthy as possible to look after your prescious wee bundle

Thank you for your responses. Well it looks like I have to get on and fully wean her then. Humph! The trouble is she hates formula, and doesn’t even like the bottle much.

I guess I’ve got a lot of work to do before I can have some steroids.

How about expressing and storing breastmilk?
I found an article on the Baby Centre website that says it can be kept in a home freezer for up to 6 months.
Here’s the link http://www.babycentre.co.uk/baby/breastfeeding/pumpingexpressing/storingbreastmilkexpert/
Hope this helps, I was lucky, my little milk monster would drink anything 🙂

Thats a really good idea Nicky.. esp as a back up.. you can buy specialist breast milk freezer bags…

It will be difficult for you to expresses large enough amounts before commencing on steriods to sustain for any length of time.. but it might help in the weaning process.. there are so many different teats out there …

Good luck

Thanks guys. I already have some expressed milk pouches in the freezer, but certainly not enough to last her until it’s safe to BF again. So yes, I’ll have to use this as I try to wean her, as I can see my milk supply either running out in this time, or Lily might not want to go back to BF.

Wish me luck!

Good luck Esther…

There is one other option I can think of.. means a lot of work.. but to ensure that your milk does not “dry up” you could continue to express every 4 hours and once over night when you are on the steriods and then disguard it… its a lot of commitment..but means you could go back to bf when the time was right…
Just remember.. Lily needs and healthy and happy mum..
