I find if I’ve had quite a lot to drink the hangover the next day goes to my legs – I mean they really ache and feelheavy and it gets better as the general hangover wears off.

Beer used to make me need the toilet after a couple of pints. Now, with MS, a little bit triggers off my bladder urgency – so half a pint 🙁

Hopefully the treatment I’m having for bladder urgency will allow me to enjoy it a bit more in a few months 😉

(Though, I don’t really enjoy the delayed reaction effects of drinking, so maybe not!)

Probably some medications that react to booze, or other juices. I don’t know MS meds, but some drugs change their absorption rate with grapefruit, starfruit,hmm trying to think of the other one:)

Hi
I inject myself with copaxone daiy and take 2 pregabalina capsules. The 1st time a was drunk i thought that was the end!!!
;( luckily friends got me home in one piece ;)I do enjoy a drink, who doesn’t??I no i just have too be happy with the 1 ;o Can i just say it was the 1st drunken night whilst takin medication, not in my life, lol

I have drank in the past quite heavily when I had only sensory problems and I must say that it helped me. I have a slight limp in my left leg and after a couple of drinks, my friends would notice I would walk straight as an arrow and felt better overall, with my recent flare up which affected my speech, and motor skills somewhat, and is accompanied with dizziness and cognitive issues so I haven’t drank at all. I already seem a little drunk, lol. So I guess it depends on the person and the symptoms. I also started LDN last night and am a little worried about trying any alcohol right now because I have heard horror stories about mixing LDN and alcohol, but you never know.

I was on Lyrica some time ago…went to a friend’s for new years and drank quite a bit…was happy high! Then we’re watching TV and I just sorta slid into unconsciousness out of the blue….one minute I’m talking and laughing, the next second everyone staring at me and slapping me trying to wake me up. Someone actually started checking my pulse to see if I was alive! After 10 minutes of this I apparently woke up with my hands up telling everyone to back off, absolutely no idea about what had happened! That was my one close encounter with meds & alcohol…

i know if am going out on the lash with my friends i have to sleep before hand or i will not even last till 1am! i sleep for ever the next day and my legs like to give up on me feeling heavy.

I get quite tired, so I usually nap before I go out, and the next day I feel a bit weak and wobbly, but it’s only for the one day every now and again so I don’t mind!

Any meds and booze is prob not a good idea…as evidenced by the above stories. The effect is gonna vary with the person, the meds, whether you eat at the same time……
Personally I NEVER get blotto, but thats cuz the meds i am on for epilepsy plus booze send me sleepy……2 glasses of vino and I’m under the table. Plus I’m with DJDsouza…..frequent trips to the loo do nothing for yr social life.

It doesn’t that much anymore, other than sometimes just feeling that another drink is going to end badly. It took twisting an ankle four times and breaking my nose for me to realise that two drinks was guaranteed to get me to the point that a whole night’s worth of drinking might not even get me to. The booze seemed to specifically target whichever major symptom was currently bugging me: originally, having a bit of a drink and a dance would set of my tonic spasms without fail, and when I started having problems with my leg and balance, it switched to that. I stopped drinking for two years, steadily made my way back to social drinking, had to stop again, and now I’m okay with drinking with mates in my house as not much can happen to me here, but rarely have more than one when out.

After a solid night on the booze … I think it is more the lack of sleep that kicks my arse for the next few days til I catch up. Other than that I have a right royal time haha.

Just gotta make sure I have a decent feed before … and a kebab on the way home haha

I like to down 10 beers on a Friday or Saturday night and I can almost walk normal go figure, and when I’m straight I drag my left leg. I probably need to drink 7 days a week but less quantities. If I drink certain beers I will get an instant headache but I like Beck’s not headache or hangover good beer.

I notice I get drunk faster which enhances but is sometimes disguised by a tendency to wobble when I walked anyway

i have cut down on alchol espeacilly wine ,i have to run to the toilet after one and have had some very very embarrassing moments thank goodness nobody saw. my legs ache too, i have just gotten to the point of thinking is it really worth it. I’m a happy talkive person without alchol anyway, its more of a social thing at my work on fridays but just gotta say NO. ha ha

After half a glass of wine my legs go all a tizwaz. I get drunk of 1, yes 1, glass of wine or a small glass of beer. I loose all control of my feet.

I have a glass of wine with my dinner. It goes straight to my head. When I leave the dining table, I am rather wobbly and never sure if it’s just me or the wine -and I don’t care !!

I have stopped drinking mostly, as I have had some issues with it. My blood pressure drops severely and I pass out. You can watch the blood drain from my face (I always turn red from heat, exercise or drinking) then I wake up on the ground. Hitting my face on a few counters and a bar stool or two got the message through to me! Now I only have a couple drinks, and I stand up very slowly. I get dizzy every time I stand up in general, so it makes sense that alcohol would intensify it, I guess.

sometimes i really miss alcohol then other times i remember the hangovers and throwing up and saying wholly inappropriate yet hilarious things to people. i have the odd swig of weak beer and a chocolate cherry liqueur. but alcohol absolutely ruins me physically and mentally, i think i’ve been more or less sober for 7 years.

Oh I forgot to add that I don’t know if it’s the MS or just me personally but the hangovers make it completely not worth it to me. Everyone else I know, especially those around my age (24) consider drinking their favorite hobby. I rarely even consider it because the next day is so awful. I remember hangovers as much easier to deal with before my dx, and I doubt it’s my age that has caused the change!

As far as the drinking thing goes for me, I’m not a big fan personally. I’ve never had a hangover, but then I don’t drink enough to warrant one (I have one, two drinks tops)

I came to a decision may years ago that alcohol’s cons really outweighed its pros.
I mean:-
– it costs a lot, especially these days;
– it can make you ill that night;
– it can make you feel terrible the next day; and
– it allows you to say and do things that you shouldn’t.

Now, I’m not saying don’t go out and socialise. Go out and have non-alcoholic drinks. Then you can watch all the others making fools of themselves!

Anyway, I can’t walk in a straight line when I’m sober! 🙂

I still enjoy my red wine, don’t really get hangovers unless I drink after my infusion can feel a bit rough!!! Defo the walking thing does work, I can walk with high heels on and not fall down if am under the influence!!! Lol! xx

All this information by MSers about the complex effects of booze are really valuable information, full of hints about the probable initial cause of MS…

Dark wines and liquors (fruit brandies are the worse) can have high
levels of methanol (wood alcohol), 50-150 and more mg/L — humans only
of all mammals have no natural catalase defense against the ADH1
enzyme quickly turning blood methanol into formaldehyde inside the
cells of the middle walls of blood vessels at the base of the brain,
right where the initial lesions of MS form — but the ethanol is an
antidote that stops this methanol/formaldehyde toxicity (used in
hospitals to treat methanol toxicity) — however, the ethanol falls by
half every 20 minutes until it is gone, leaving the ADH1 enzyme free
to start making the residual methanol into formaldehyde, the major
cause of alcohol hangovers “the morning after the night before” —
this is why many chronic diseases are worse for people who never drink
alcohol, compared to those who drink alcohol only a little, a mystery

What does this report recommend? A lot of booze, just the occasional glass of wine or no booze at all. I am a little confused. What does it say about tea and coffee?

mmm it’s definately saying, don’t drink if you’ve been taking Lyrica!! I’m on LDN and that’s not too clever if you’ve had a skinful.
Otherwise i’m like alot a people, stagger into the pub and walk out…….well walk after 3-4 pints!!
I find too my hangovers take days to get over and i’m very heavy legged the next day!!

Yes I enjoy a glass of wine in the evening but I have vowed this morning to give it up in favour of a G&t or similar, I dont know what it is but wine has been making my legs awful the next day, really stiff ! its also full of calories so best off without it I reckon

It’s 11:00 pm here in Sydney., I’ve had a really bad day with my left leg. Couldn’t lift it, dragged it around all day

I just went to get a Beer (having had a few already). Guess what ? My left leg has decided to work again 🙂

Being a man of few hobbies, wine is definitely top of the list, collecting, storing and most importantly drinking as my inability fill my cellar testifies (more drinking than buying). I’m with @stumbler on one count, it is not worth drinking cheap wine…no upside! Hangovers milder if not nonexistent and given it’s more expensive you can’t really drink yourself silly. More technically better wines will have typically less methanol. Now I need to rethink my intake of diet and coke zero, if aspartame is an issue, hadn’t noticed that yet, this where I get my caffein pick me up in the afternoon as I do not drink coffee…..hmmmhmmmm

I suspect it is one of those things that would turn psychosomatic, I hadn’t noticed any issue with aspartame before and I consume 2 or 3 cans a day of some diet soda variety. Now that I know about it every little tingle and itch will now be attributed to that….. One more thing to have to let go off. So is plain old sugar good now?!

I’ve seen plenty of health complaints on the Net for 13 years about sucralose, but none at all about stevia, except some dislike its flavor — so I buy stevia as little bottles of white powder, and use about 1 or 2 tiny spoons (1/8 inch wide) per cup tea — sometimes I use a packet or a half-teaspoon of regular sugar — seems really sweet to me, having lost interest in soda pop — another type of drink to worry about is any fruit juice (tomato, orange, grape, grapefruit, ect.) preserved in cans jars plastics — fresh uncooked juices and fruits kept frozen are OK, while even fresh tomato probably has too much methanol for MSers — best for each person to stay alert to their own experience — also, really good policy to avoid all chemical food additives (preservatives, MSG, dyes) — http://www.forksoverknives.com

I pay attention to ears ringing, drowsiness, irritation, confusion, allergies, sneezes, headache, skin rash, as clues I recently took in something harmful.

I’ve been using Stevia for a few years now; the taste does take a but to get used to but if you believe in it, you can adjust. Yeah, it’s fairly concentrated so I just use a few drops in my coffee

That’s very useful guys, I’ve been recently diagnosed, and I think I will need to overhaul my diet…. Do you think it is worth talking to a nutritionist and are there some who specialise in MS? It could be something the MS nurse helps with, I’ve not signed up for that yet as I’ve been doing everything privately…. Expensive but I can’t deal with the NHS wait times. I’ve seen my Neuro who works both for the NHS and on the side in a private clinic like 6 times in the last 3 mths, done 5 MRIs over the last year and every test under the sun in a month. He even wanted a 2nd opinion from an NHS only professor and I got an appointment within 2 weeks, none of that wait 3 mths wait nonsense, that’s why a lot of us remain undiagnosed for so long and get stressed out about which is major cause for relapses, what a sled defeating system!

The MS society has several publications. The MS nurses were helpful but have the ‘mainline’ view, which is to have a normal healthy diet with as little animal fat as possible. If you want to go more extreme, there is a lot of info on the MSRC website. They advocate the ‘Best Bet Diet’, which is basically cutting out dairy and animal fats (I think!). Then there’s all the supplements you can take…. I’ve said this already in other posts but it’s worth re-stating, I asked the neuro about special diets and he told me that yes, I might feel better but no, it wouldn’t affect the disease course. He told me he was quite sure about it (because I asked him again!). As he’s a leading MS researcher, I did believe him. Making changes in your diet isn’t easy but I guess it’s part of coming to terms with MS and deciding how you want to live your life. Like you, I toyed with the idea of a nutritionist. Didn’t do it in the end but did get tested for food insensitivities through the York Test (google it, it’s a home blood test which you send off for analysis). Nothing came up so in the end I just carried on as before, but I try my best to be healthy.

I’m on Rebif 3 times a week and take it on a Tue/Thur/Sun schedule just so I can have Friday and Saturday to be able to drink beer. That sentence totally makes it sound like I sit in a chair with a case of beer and go to town on it haha. That’s not it at all, but I do like to have a few beers now and again. I love beer. Used to drink more of it, but I do get the heavy legs the next day.

Also, I brew my own beer and have started customizing recipes. I wonder if I can figure out an MS friendly recipe that magically repairs myelin. Beer would be the most amazing way to cure a disease. I’d look forward to taking my medicine then!

My wife and I aren’t really big drinkers, but I have noticed my booze tolerance has gone down over the years as the disease has progressed. I avoid hangovers by just smoking pot instead. 🙂

went for a meal on Sunday and had too much to drink………still feeling it now, fatigued, can’t be bothered, heavy legs etc. Still was a good day though!!

seem to be at the stage now where i stagger into a pub and have to be carried out rather than walk out!!

“I want to talk with people with MS or people who know somebody with multiple sclerosis. That case has, I think, actually been proven for me. There was actually research done that looked at the parts of the brain just outside of the plaque areas and they searched for changes, and they found changes. I say that disease has been solved. I know I’m brazen saying that. I’m sure enough to say it. I’m sure enough of the fact that the recommendations I’m making to change your diet is so safe that you’re risking your life by not making those changes.

I like a glass (or bottle) of wine occasionally. It makes me forget this awful thing I have and at the moment it makes me walk better. Sometimes I do zone out totally but I come back quickly. I wouldn’t do it too often and the hangovers are worth it but I will be watching myself carefully to see how my symptoms go. ★
