About Shift.ms

What is Shift.ms?

Shift.ms is an online social network for young and recently diagnosed MSers. To have full access to our website, you need to sign up as a member. Membership is free.

Once you’ve signed up, you’ll get your own profile, which you can personalise. You’ll also be able to engage with other MSers.

We’re an independent charity based in the UK, but people from all over the world use our site. You can read more about what we do and where we came from on our ‘about us page’

How do I become a member?

Registering for Shift.ms is easy. Head to our ‘join’ page and follow the instructions.

You can be anonymous on the site, if you would prefer. Just don’t use your real name as your username.

I haven’t received my confirmation email – what do I do?

If you haven’t received your confirmation email, head to your email’s spam or junk folder – it may have gone in there.

If it is not in there, leave it for up to an hour, as there is sometimes a delay in the emails going out. If after an hour, you still haven’t received it, contact us and we’ll see what we can do to help.

How do I log in?

The log in button is at the top left of the page (‘sign in’). If you can’t see it, sign in here.

I’ve forgotten my username/password – what do I do?

If you’ve forgotten your username, it is possible to log in with your email address instead. It has to be the email address you registered with!

If you’ve forgotten your password, click on ‘lost your password?’ at the bottom of the log-in page and follow the instructions to reset it.

How do I change my notifications?

When you are logged into Shift.ms, hover your mouse over your avatar and a menu should pop up.

I have a notification of a friendship request, but when I click on it there is nothing there. What’s happening?

As with most public forums, we sometimes get fake members who join up and then request lots of people as friends at once. Thankfully, we have a super quick system of dealing with these ‘members’ and they are quickly deleted. If they have requested your friendship and then been deleted, you’ll get a notification, but then the request won’t be there. This is perfectly normal and a good sign that we’re keeping our forum a safe place to be.

Rest assured that you’ll never miss a genuine friendship request from a real member.

Using the site

Site development 2015

We are really proud of our website, and hope you enjoy using it. However, we are not Facebook and have a tiny team working on it so we try and use what is called ‘Agile Development’. This means we try and focus on one thing at a time – and sometimes have to make difficult decisions on what to build first, based on what will give value to the most people. That can also mean that we sometimes have to lose functionality to gain in other places due to conflicts of code etc.
We hope you understand and are happy to bear with us as the site should just keep getting better and better over time.

Tell me more about the forum

The forum is a place for MSers to come together, share experiences and support one another. We do have some house rules, which you can find here, but we’re not a strict forum. When you first join, make sure to put a post on the forum to introduce yourself.

Once you’ve finished writing a post and it’s live on the forum, it will be automatically categorised by subject. This will make it searchable for other MSers. You can edit the categories once the post has been published if you wish.

How does the search function work?

At the top right of the screen, you’ll see a magnifying glass, which is our search button. Using this, you can find information on topics which interest you. We tag all our members posts to make it easier to find what you’re looking for.

Tell me more about groups

Groups are there to bring members in similar locations or with similar interests together. If you can’t find a group which you like, feel free to set up your own, by clicking on ‘suggest a group’ at the top of the page. You’ll be made an admin of the group. Make sure you promote your group on the forum, otherwise other members may not know you’re there!

Meeting others

How do I meet other MSers?

The best way to meet other MSers is by making friends with them. You can search for members similar to you via the members page. You can find MSers near to where you live.

We think it’s important to meet MSers with similar interests to you and who you will get along with. Just because two people have MS doesn’t automatically mean they will get along! As such, our focus is on helping you find like-minded people, who you can chat online to, or arrange to meet for coffee or a beer.
