Showering Tip

Hi guys 👋 I'm now SPMS and everything is getting decidedly more difficult. Showering in particular is a major hazard in many ways. My right side is good but my left side is affected by spasticity. I'm right handed and can't do a lot with the left due to weakness and proprioception issues. So when I'm ready to wash my hair, I pick the shampoo bottle up with my right hand and squeeze it into the left. However, by the time I've placed the shampoo bottle down on the rack, my left hand fingers have curled up into a claw and my palm has turned 90 degrees causing the shampoo to swiftly deposit itself on my feet. AARRGGH! 😤 *Counts to 3 to try and calm down. This happens with conditioner too. Double AARRGGH! 🤬 *Counts to three again. This is getting expensive. 💰 Shampoo is still a problem but I've discovered Pantene Foam Conditioner (not sure if I'm allowed to say the name but I don't think anyone else does it). Once you've squirted into you hand it just sits there. 😊 👍 Just makes my day a little bit easier and saves a few pennies! Suze x

@Highlander

My problem is having a pee... Can't hit the target to easily 😟 Too busy wobbeliing and have trouble getting a grip, problems, problems... problems

watsoncraig

@watsoncraig

I sit down to pee now as I’m fed up cleaning the floor. @petlamb shower gel does all!

Vixen

@Vixen

@petlamb, it’s the little things that make the biggest difference, right?

Highlander

@Highlander

@watsoncraig That's another one .... struggle to get back up again, problems, problems... problems.... such fun 😀

MamaWals

@MamaWals

Have you tried bar shampoo and conditioner? That way you could use your right hand to rub it onto your head and there’s nothing to squeeze. I use bar shampoo and conditioner because I’m trying to reduce my plastic consumption and I actually think they work better than the liquid type. There are several different brands out there - I use Ethique’s products and a bar lasts me about three or four months.

RMDaniels

@RMDaniels

@petlamb Hiya sweet lady! Sounds very frustrating! Have you seen the shampoo dispensers you can attach to the shower wall. They just require a push to dispense shampoo, conditioner & body wash. I’ve seen them on Amazon, so should be easy to order.

PetLamb

@PetLamb

@highlander @watsoncraig Sorry to hear about your woes. I suppose that's where us females have got it a little easier. Sitting on the throne 🚽 is practically hazard free - apart from a) numb hands and b) getting to standing position again afterwards! @vixen YES! Absolutely. Trouble is there are so many little things to try to make easier. 😕 @mamawals I've never heard of that but I'll look into it! Thanks for mentioning it. 😊 @silvana_hansen I know eactly what you mean about 'processing' time and 'recovery' time! It's exactly the same for me. The whole thing - shower and recovery, then drying hair, another recovery and finally getting dressed - takes about three hours plus. I thought about a 2 in 1 as well - but I heard bad things about it 'stripping' your hair. Not sure how much truth there is in that though . . . . . . I'm starting to get grey roots too. 😫 I use a spray-on thingy in between hairdresser visits after my hair has been dried. It washes out next time you shower. Too expensive to go to hairdressers all the time and I could imagine the what a total and utter prize 💣 💣 💣 BOMBSITE 💣 💣 💣 the bathroom would look like if I tried to dye it myself. Ha ha! I'm not gonna go there! Suze x

DominicS

@DominicS

@petlamb - Shower gel does all. This many separate products idea is a relatively recent marketing swizz. I have a stick-on handle to steady myself in the shower. You can also use a shower seat. Essentially a plastic stool as I imagine that once sitting things may be a bit easier. I am right-handed and ended up in hospital 7y ago with a busted right femur and quite spectacularly bust r. clavicle. This rendered my right sie largely useless. I used my left hand to squeeze shower gel onto my hair and then all left hand to work down. Laborious but worked. Being v high on morphine made it an additional challenge. As to peeing - definitely a shower activity ;)

PetLamb

@PetLamb

@rmdaniels Yes, I've seen them! Only trouble is, I know they're gonna get broken! Kinda hard to explain but I don't know where my body is in space. This is called PROPRIOCEPTION problems. Definition: “Awareness of posture, balance or position due to the reception of stimuli, produced within the organism, which stimulate receptors (called proprioceptors) located within muscles, tendons, joints and the vestibular apparatus of the inner ear”. Sorry if I haven't explained it clearly enough. My elbows especially, are normally black and blue when I emerge from the shower cubicle. It happens when I close my eyes to stop the water going in to keep my contact lens in. Oooh, it’s complicated. Grrr. OK – I’ll try to explain . . . . *thinks. I have to wear contact lens in the shower otherwise I wouldn’t see anything clearly as well as not being able to hear anything as I have developed a profound hearing problem too. On top of that my balance is shot to pieces. I would trip up over a pin. This happens even if I'm seated. It’s really scary tbh. I just know that if I had them fitted to the wall they would be broken in no time and all that would be left is a broken bracket – maybe causing more problems. 😢

@PetLamb

Hi @dominics @watsoncraig Shower gel? What about nutrients for your hair? Is that a girly thing then? OMG! Is that a marketing swizz too. WOW! They really cash in from us females then. We tend to believe everything they say about what you SHOULD and SHOULDN'T use for hair products. I used to wash my hair twice so that it was extra squeaky clean. I really fell for all their 💩. Those days are long gone now. @dominics Sorry to hear about your stint when you were high on morphine and banged up in The Hotel NHS 🤕. Can’t begin to imagine how painful that must have been, along with the out-of-body experience of the morphine. PMSL about the peeing comment though . . . . . . . . *thinks* Oh lol, just made a joke. 🤣 Suze x

Rebecca_Adams

@Rebecca_Adams

Hi there ..when I'm in the shower I sit on a shower chair ..even if I need it or not...I use natural soap and shampoo and conditioner and I find it easier if I sit I can control things better.. Goat milk shampoo and conditioner is thicker so it might not get out of your hand as easy..or empty shampoo and conditioner in separate jars..then just use your right hand to scoop it out and wash ..good luck ..xxx

DominicS

@DominicS

@petlamb - nutrients? All hair is dead. the length is from the live stuff being pushed out. I have never heard of corpses needing nutrients! Trust our cousins across the water to come up with the delightful name.... nonetheless, I usually stick to this. The exception being when my wretched hair gets too long and I need to do something with that wax stuff so I Don't look like a rough sleeper. Then I need the awful ott soap (usually sodium laureth/lauryl sulfate - also found in things from garage floor and engine degreasers to some kinds of toothpaste) Check this out https://www.nopoomethod.com/ From experience - you need a two-three week window for it all to settle down as initially the hair overreacts as it is too clean by over-producing sebum (oils) but it all settles down. The caveat is if you use strong hairstyling products that need strong chemicals to rinse them out.

PetLamb

@PetLamb

@rebecca-adams Great advice. Thank you. I will get a seat 🪑 and give it a go. 😊

PetLamb

@PetLamb

@dominics Thanks for that . . . . . . I think! 😂 Will look into it. It's a big step for a girlie!

DominicS

@DominicS

Girlie or person who has grown up inundated by promotional media that does not rely on actual credible science? The site also has its fair share of hippy-dippy types who see the scientific method as merely an adjunct to their own gut feeling or credulity! What is the worst that can happen? Will you be ostracised from polite society?

merfield

@merfield

@domincs, shower gel contains foaming agent and detergent and god knows what else. Fine if you want to it on YOUR head but we girlies don’t. Personally I use Aveda and it is good and wholesome as is the conditioner. A friend tried the ‘no washing’ method and it works so long as you can live with smelly matted hair while it balances. xx

merfield

@merfield

@petlamb, not nutrients for your HAIR but for the HAIR ROOTS. I’ve got a squeezey bottle with a hook that hangs on a rail so it’s upside down but has a valve to stop it spewing out unless it’s squeezed. I decant shampoo into it. xx

PetLamb

@PetLamb

@merfield Thanks for pressing the girly point of view home! I wil try Aveda. Will also try the hook thingy and decant my stuff into that - great tip. I'll let you know how I get on after I've bought some at the weekend. Plus, I'm going to get a chair as per @rebecca_adams advice. Hopefully all change at shower time now. 😊 x

merfield

@merfield

@ silvana_hansen, like hair, facial skin gets greasier the more it’s washed/cleaned so I just wash mine with warm water on a ‘wipe’.. No moisturiser, nothing.. I’ve done it for years - it works for me. xx

merfield

@merfield

@petlamb, I have a shower chair by Etac, not cheap but a deep seat and with arms. https://www.etac.com/products/ xx

Rebecca_Adams

@Rebecca_Adams

Good to have shower chair with arms..can put face washer on the arms..u can get caddy holders to put shaver etc in or get the ones that stick on tiles..try the herbal toothpaste at Woolworths green packaging $2 no nasties in it ..just got mine last week..and goat milk soap sensitive skin ..chemist warehouse pack of 6 $9 thick soap different fragrance ..eg..coconut oil, lemon mrtyle , honey ,etc..they seel shampoo and conditioner no nasties ...go natural !!!!! He he

merfield

@merfield

@silvana_hansen, I don’t know if my method works on makeup cos I don’t wear any. Maybe try it and see. I don’t wear any cos I’m sensitive to most - it makes me itch. I do occasionally rub lippy on my cheeks to cheer me up and match my lipstick..... but mostly nothing, even lippy. xx

nanab

@nanab

I tried a shampoo bar recently and I’m hooked! A friend of mine makes and sells them as well as soaps,bubbles,etc. I’ve always used conditioner but with her shampoo bars I don’t have to! My hair is better than it’s been in years. No more waisted shampoo getting washed away-plus no more plastic bottles!

JoAnna_Lathrop_Haag_Soluri

@JoAnna_Lathrop_Haag_Soluri

@petlamb, besides using a shower chair, have you just put the shampoo directly on your head? Or rest your hand on your leg so the shampoo stays on your hand on not tipped onto the shower floor ... Just thoughts, I've never used my shower chair yet. I have sat down in my shower before though.

PetLamb

@PetLamb

@nanab hanks for the tip on shampoo bars - will look them up and give them a try!

PetLamb

@PetLamb

@joanna_lathrop_haag_soluri Hi Joanna, I have problems with proprioception (see earlier in the post for details), so I wouldn't be able to just put the shampoo straight onto my head as I would have problems with balance and knowing where my head is! Sounds stupid, I know - but that's the way it is for me! I have a shower seat now so I will try the hand resting on my leg trick - because I would be sitting down - therefore less balance issues. Thanks! It's way overdue - I should have got one earlier, but I've been stubborn in the past thinking I could manage. Now I need to put my safety first because I'm having way too many accidents on shower days.

merfield

@merfield

@ petlamb, Good Luck with shower day - I’ve had to abandon mine: hellish job getting in, (smallish opening, small bathroom altogether) last time I got wedged in the actual shower. Very worrying as my carer couldn’t get me out and said said she’d have to call the fire brigade lol! Only if they’re in uniform - and blindfolded!! So I don’t want to risk that again 😉

PetLamb

@PetLamb

@merfield Sorry to hear about you having to abandon showers. 😕 I don't think I'll be far behind you if I'm honest. I shower in the en-suite and it's a tiny room with a small shower door opening. I get wedged often because of spasticity/balance issues after being in a shower that is slightly warmer than my body tenperature (causing the spasticity problems) and also having to step down to the floor over he lip of the shower base. The moving shower door adds to the problem. It's OK atm, because during the warmer months I have cooler/cold showers, but when the autumn kicks in it'll all start again. There's no way I could get in the bath without accidents occurring either on the way in or (more likely) on the way out when it's slippy. I'm starting to think of what the cost might be to have it turned into a wet room. My father-in-law had Parkinson's, and although they weren't made of money, they had a decent quote for the work and got it done. It worked a treat and had many SAFE showers on a seat, administered by his carer. I think it's something that I seriously need to consider. BTW, I like your comment about the firemen - we must insist on full uniform!! I would need a cold shower then! LOL! 🤣

cameron

@cameron

Have you considered washing your hair less often? I certainly hadn't till two years ago, when I broke my arm and was housebound with little mobility so wasn't overly worried about appearance or hair. Three weeks on, I hadn't managed to wash it and it didn't actually look that bad. When I eventually got to the hairdresser, she commented on its good condition! She recommended no more than one wash a week and no conditioner. Who knew?!

PetLamb

@PetLamb

Hi @cameron Thanks for your comment. I do understand that leaving you hair is helpful or its overall condition because you're not washing the natural oils out of it. I would do it if I had to but it would be hell for me to do it on an ongoing basis. 😖 Call it vanity if you want (and it probably is!) - but I like my hair feeling squeaky clean. I used to shower every day until I had to rethink things because of my MS and I think if I didn't have a shower every other day now I would go slightly mad and definitely into depression 🤣 - but that's just me! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jl0ChJDCCnA I know this may sound back to front, but in trying to keep my hair in good condition and not 'drying out', I spray a little oil into my hair after it has been washed and before I blow dry it. In my mind's eye, I can see guy 'Shifters' now rolling their eyes! 🙄 Suze

grahamjk

@grahamjk

Hi all, just for information purposes the shampoo bars are actually quite good my late wife used to get them from lush and they are priced anywhere from £7.00 upwards (depends what’s in it) and they’re all natural. I liked the seaweed one (when I actually had hair). I hope this helps. Graham xx

PetLamb

@PetLamb

@grahamjk Thanks Graham - I'll be getting one to sample at the weekend. 😉

@JO_G_Gee

@petlamb DONT BEND DOWN IN SHOWER!! I’ve got these 3 baskets that hang over top of shower screen so they are there in front of me! Bending down in shower spells danger to me!

PetLamb

@PetLamb

I agree! I too have something that hangs over the shower screen now!

ItsMewithMS

@ItsMewithMS

@cameron how often you should wash and condition your hair depends a lot on it's texture and condition. I have very typical hair (I think ;-) that is primarily straight but not straight enough to look good without straightening and not curly enough to look good without curling it...so the awful middle...but easy to care for. Any shampoo or conditioner is basically fine if they aren't too heavy or harsh. My daughter got the recessive curlier hair gene. She blames me but I honestly don't think I passed that to her ;-0 But she started a totally new hair care regime over a year ago and it works much better for her. Hair is much healthier and looks better. It involves only shampooing once a week and even getting the hair wet for some conditioning a couple of times a week. Search Curly Girl Method or follow this link if you can https://www.naturallycurly.com/curlreading/no-poo/the-curly-girl-method-for-coily-hair This isn't my hair type but I have learned that my hair and body are better with showering every other day. I wash one day and leave my hair down and the alternate days do some type of updo or braid. My hair is healthier for it and so is my skin!

@Julie_Blackburn

I use a shower chair, all my issues are in the legs! That's so tough having a hand fail you (even if it is non dominant) but this was a GREAT tip for a product that will "sit there!" Thanks for sharing!
