Avonex. Week 9 of injections..

Hi all just wanted to share my experience of being on Avonex injections. I have just done my 9th week of injecting and all is going well with just a few interesting minor things having happened. Learning how to operate the injection pen was quite easy, I was given 3 goes to practice on myself with practice pens on a sponge on my leg while supervised by a nurse who came to my home. Then I did the actual injection. It didn't hurt apart from the very tiny "TING" when the needle goes in... count to ten and then remove the needle/pen from my leg gently and secure it in a special locking cap.. Done. Over these last 9 weeks I have had very slight side effects consisting of a stubborn headache hours after which I keep at bay with Paracetamol, very slight temperature; just felt a tiny bit warmer than usual, again Paracetamol worked on that too, also took some advice from Shift MSers and drink lots of water and eat well too :) . Several weeks ago I decided I would show my daughter how clean and easy my injections were to do but when I pulled out the needle I must have hit a blood vessel going in and blood trickled out and down my leg which was a surprise.. stopped not long after but that was a bit of a shock.. also had a bruise in that spot for the next two weeks. Bit nervous after that one but all has been fine in that respect since. On week 7 after injecting in my left leg I was left with a slight red raised patch at the injection site that was warm to touch and felt solid under the skin but again it had gone back to normal in 2 weeks so was ready to be injected in that leg again (alternate legs used each week..) And apart from having ON the week I started on Avonex (cleared up within two weeks) and having just had a hideous cold for two weeks I have had no major side effects from being on Avonex.. (touch wood..!!). :)

@northernlass I'm extavia which I believe isn't a major difference to avonex, just yours is 4 jags a month and mine is 14/15 jags a month. Yours goes into a muscle, mines dosnt. But I'm 100% understanding you having a lasting bruise or red patch. Me and Dick was talking about this the other night bcoz there's a part of my tummy I did 5wks ago now and the bruise just won't disappear and one on my bingo wing that's 4 weeks old that looks like Dick has grabbed me and chucked me around, lol. I get the headache 2-4hrs after jag and sometimes (not to often) get sore guns!! Haha. Does olive oil have guns?! So I guess you are super normal and hopefully your side effects won't get any worse. I wouldn't have thought they will. Good on ya ? ? xxx

Cool. Sounds like you've had a much better time of it than i did. I had either no side effects or the feeling of being hit like a train - fatigue and burning up. It really ruins an evening with friends if you have to leave because your body has turned to jelly. As for the blood, i found the best thing to do with that was try and watch for blood vessels, its hard to avoid in certain leg areas, but usually its not too difficult. also, we did have some fun with marking out my legs for injection sites: https://instagram.com/p/vj6CZkpZVp/
