APPT! Mayo Clinic. EMG question. Supplement question too.

I finally got an appointment at the Mayo Clinic while waiting for a referral to go through where I live. I think the message is NEVER stop advocating for yourself even if it feels like you are running in circles. Mayo doctor was surprised they didn’t push my appt to happen faster here where I am. Mayo called me three days ago and I go 11/29. They told me to plan for 5-7 business days there. I am nervous and weirdly relieved to be able to have an answer… I made the awful mistake of checking Google and well it gave me the worst possible condition I could have so at this point I’m hoping these doctors will tell me that’s wrong…. I’m still leaning towards MS because I have all over my body fasciculations, sometimes they feel internal. My eye last month (the left) was incredibly irritated and sore. My calves feel tight (like after those calf cramps? And as they are flexed and won’t relax — does that make sense?) Headaches on and off too. My left arm and leg felt weaker for a while and now feel a bit more normal but I get numbness and tingling if I stay in the same position a lot. Mid to lower back pain and neck pain (when I tilt my head back). I feel these “chills” that go from my lower back/glute to my feet. Every now and then I’ll close my eyes and feel like my head is shaking inside. (This to me is one of the worse feelings…) My brain fog and energy got a bit better after starting B12. I want to start ALA — does anyone take it? Has anyone had side effects? When do you take it? My first MRI was normal They found something on my cervical spine but decided I was born with it and just the way I was…. They did find a nodule on my thyroid and I’m going in for an ultrasound on Monday. On 11/30 I have an EMG (what to expect?) The hardest thing is that my husband is gone for military service and it’s only my son and I and my son never been away from me for longer than a night and he is staying with an aunt so he can stay home and continue school…. My heart is tight. Any feedback/similar experience/ or note would be highly appreciated !

I'm so sorry you are going through all this while your husband is away, it can all be so difficult and overwhelming... While I can't answer all your questions or experiences I can maybe shed some like on what to expect with the EMG... I had one over the summer because I was getting intermittent numbness and tingling in my fingers -- either my ring finger and pinky or my thumb/1st/middle fingers... My Neuro wanted to determine if I maybe had some peripheral nerve issues not related to MS. It was actually really pretty straight forward, not painful at all. A bit time consuming because they have to put a bunch of sensors on specific areas of the limbs which are used to measure the electrical current through your nerves.... then the Dr will basically send a little shock down your arm or legs or whatever they are checking out.. It just sort of feels like a quick buzz/zap... it's not painful, just sort of annoying feeling. the computer will measure how fast it moved down the nerves. They should explain everything to you as they're setting up etc. The length of time you're there is really based on how many peripheral nerves they are testing... I had both arms tested and I think I was there about 90mins or so, start to finish. Best of luck with everything, hopefully you will have a better idea of what is going on soon. <3 Best, Sarah
