Blood Donations

Having used to donate blood, I called up the blood bank to ask if I’m able to donate blood now that I have MS. I was told ‘No’ as there isn’t enough evidence to show if MS is transmittable & if it’s transmittable by blood. This is a bit of a disappointment & I’m surprised there isn’t enough evidence & research done regarding this topic! Has anyone with MS been able to successfully donate blood?

Hey I’m in the uk and had the same deal as you. Gave blood regularly & as soon as I was diagnosed….all had to stop. Was gutted but there are other ways of being helpful organ donation & brain tissue bank donation this is after death of course and while ur waiting to give those donations u could join a research study or trial.

In the US people with MS can donate blood. I don't see how MS can transfer by blood. Someone would have to explain that to me, I'm not an expert in this field. I get STIs and STDs transfer through bodily fluids. People with HIV have in some cases donated organs to others with HIV. Strange how some countries say it's okay and others don't. I guess the NHS want to be careful.
