Diet advice

Hi, just joined today. I was diagnosed with R&R MS in August and I have to admit I’ve been struggling coming to term with the diagnosis. I’ve done some research and have heard lots of people on a vegan diet have had great results keeping relapses under control. Has anyone experienced this or gone vegan because of your MS?

Hello @nicn and big welcome to Shift. There is so much research out there, it’s easy to be overwhelmed. Believe me 5oughm if any one diet was a game-changing relapse preventer, then we would all be on it! There are some basics with being diagnosed that most pundits would agree on. Before even considering a particular diet. That is, to live healthily; rest, balanced diet, avoid processed food, do not smoke. These are essentials. As for diets, different things are highly effective for individuals. Trial and error is the best way forward, as diet has to fit in with lifestyle, such as if you have children and family. Or whether for example you are vegan or vegetarian, in which case there are ethical factors. Some diets seem better for enhancing energy, some for weight loss, some for specific symptoms. OMS and Swank are popular amongst the MS fraternity. Personally, I have been on Keto for two years, initially to help with weight gain during and after diagnosis and starting Tecfidera. The thing is @nicn, a diet needs to be sustainable and not make you miserable! Weight until the festivities are over, and think about what’s gonna be important for you to get out of a diet. Good luck with your choices and pathway! X
