@Jekmccloskey , Avonex is one of the CRAB (Copaxone, Rebif, Avonex and Betaferon) Disease Modifying Therapies (DMTs), the original DMTs that have been around for thirty plus years. They are the least effective DMTs available now. If this is your Neuro's suggestion, they are obviously following the "escalation" philosophy for prescribing DMTs. By this I mean that they start you off on the least effective DMTs, if your MS then progresses, then they consider moving you onto a better DMT. So, you have to accrue MS damage to get on the most effective DMTs. The latest philosophy is to hit MS hard and fast with the most effective DMTs. This would hopefully improve your overall prognosis. So, look at the full range of DMTs and ask for the one you really want. 😉

Dear @Jemccloskey, It's a bit disappointing that you were left on your to make the choice. as @stumbler says, you have chosen one of the less effective D.M.T.'s. Clearly, it's your choice but maybe a second opinion with the input of your consultant/M.S. nurse. I see you're in Londonderry. The M.S. Society has a branch there, on Broomhill Mews. Their telephone number is 02871344497. It might be worth giving them a visit/call and getting some more information. Best wishes, Jon

Dear @Jekmccloskey, Apologies, I should have said Derry/Londonderry - I've been away too long! Good luck. Jon

Hi there Choosing a drug is a tricky one especially when we are early days into diagnosis. I would like to encourage you to think again and take a look at the Barts campaign “Time is Brain” before you settle on Avonex. https://www.msbrainhealth.org/ If your MS medical team has told you it’s your choice then you can ask for highly effective treatments which help maintain brain function and lower the risk of increasing disability. Avonex was the only treatment offered to me 8 years ago and I am glad that I took control of my MS and switched hospitals to a team that had the most up to date view of DMTs. Knowledge is power over our conditions. Best wishes
