Our Brains Can Heal

Our brain can and does change through the course of our lifetime. This is known as neuroplasticity. We humans are organic creatures made of flesh and bone, nerves, tissues and neurons and synapses firing in our brains. The brain was once considered to be a static organ that did not change after we finished developing as babies, however, research in the last two decades has discovered that the brain is a changeable (plastic) organ that is always growing and changing in response to our own genes and even our experiences (Pinel 2018). Stress, anxiety and disease can affect our brain negatively, but this remarkable organ can heal itself and develop new pathways for those neurons and synapses to do their jobs. For those of us with MS lesions, it means the brain can develop new pathways around lesions and scleroses for messages to get to our nerves. I know people (myself included) who used to be in a wheelchair and can now walk again. Never, Never, Never give up hope.

How were you able to creat the needed pathways?

@HeidiHelps , thank you very much for this! I do have multiple lesions in my brain and other places. Not in a wheelchair but was concerned I will be soon. Even got a cane, a Hover round scooter and a walker with a seat because it's needed. And when I was first diagnosed with RRMS in 2016 I learned that people with MS often end up in wheelchairs. With that said plus my current condition I can definitely see a wheelchair in my future. But I do also have severe Scoliosis so it might be in my future no matter what I do 🤷🏿‍♀️
