Hi all,

I know I need to up my dose, but not sure how much to take?

My Boots Vit D says 12ug per tablet but I’m sure my Nurse said up to 1000mg per day!!!

This would mean the whole tub and more? Can someone help?

Thanks

i take a high dose vit D3, which is different to the type you get in multivits which is D2. D3 isnot suitable for vegetarians who have to stick to D2. my capsules are 5,000mg but i don’t necessarily take one everyday. there is no definitive study i can suggest as there are lots of differing opinions on the pros and cons of high dose vit d. i used to suffer from keratosis pilaris (chicken skin) on the backs of my arms and thighs. the only thing that has ever helped me with this condition are sun tans or high dose vitamin d3, so i would continue to take it even if it wasn’t a benefit for the ms. i buy mine from amazon

I use a spray, 1000mg, not sure if workd but still doing it. Again you can get from Amazon.

Hi 1,000 Iu (international units) are equivalent to 25ug. Lamberts do a 1,000 Iu tablet and there is another brand as well which I can’t remember the name of (not v helpful I know). I take 2,000 Iu of the Lamberts daily as I have a mild deficiency but I know some people who take up to 5,000 Iu. Best thing is to clarify with your nurse. The Lamberts one is a bit hard to get hold off but have a word with your pharmacist and they may offer you an alternative.

I take one healthy origins 5000 iu D3 softgel per day, I got them from Amazon. I’ve no idea if they’re helping, but I figure it can’t be doing me any harm.

I take 5,000iu of the Lamberts vD3 daily. They can usually be ordered in by your local pharmacy if it’s not normally stocked there – or I’ve seen them on sale on the internet too. D3 is the best to take. I don’t know if you’ve seen Dr. Ram’s vD video on the magazine?

Can anyone honestly say taking VD is helping? In what way?

December 9, 2011 at 7:29 am #11353

I’ve definitely noticed a difference in terms of my general well-being. Much fewer infections, for one. There is a wealth of research supporting the benefits of vD, not only in MS but also other conditions.

Just yesterday, this came out in the news too: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-16086004

(Dr. Ram, who did the vD video for Shift was involved in the above research).

I personally believe that vD has a hugely important role in MS, after having read up on the subject a great deal and after having heard many talks on the issue.

Amazing podcast on Vitamin D – My partner and I take it religiously – we have really noticed a difference, we avoid general bugs and feel better for it. I can’t really speak for my MS, although I haven’t had any major activity – but as I’m not a GP, I wouldnt like to say!

i’m so glad the results of the new genetic study are so conclusive. i was beginning to wonder if i was doing the right thing for my kids by giving them D3 too (as i had read a study linking high vit D with heart problems). But now i know i have a good chance of preventing this problem for my kids.

Hi Edw, did you see the vid on Vitamin D? Hope you find it useful – http://shift.ms/magazine/2011/09/vitamin-d-your-questions-answered/

Vitamin D and turmeric. Theese may both help you. There’s a Facebook group called multiple sclerosis and turmeric for more info

Hi Ed,

Ditto to Beki’s comment about the video – it’s very informative.

I always say to anyone thinking of starting Vit D supplements to get their levels checked first, just to see what they are. Your neuro/MS Nurse/GP should be able to do it (it’s a blood test).

Then you’ll get a better idea of how much you should be taking. I was severely deficient and started on 3,000iu p/day (although I’ve been told that I could have taken up to 5,000 iu/day). Make sure it’s D3 that you’re taking (not D2, which is what many GPs recommend as it’s cheaper!).

I use the Lamberts brand, which comes in denominations of 400iu and 1000iu tablets.

Hope that helps!

Does anyone think that taking vit D has had any benefits? Never had my levels checked or thought of taking a supplement so would be good to know? ta, helen

October 5, 2011 at 9:29 pm #10674

Hiya,

I’ve been taking 5000iu daily for about a year and a half now. I get mine from BigVits on the net. A tub of 360 soft gels costs about £15 i think.Give them a try

Just for any of you who are fed up of endless tablets…Holland and Barrett do a vit D spray…quite sweet but I find it so much better than taking a mountain of tablets:)

I saw gp last weekand she said she’d never heard of any connection between ms and vitamin d!! Told her i’d talk to my ms nurse.

October 18, 2011 at 12:28 pm #10788

Hi hfrow,
I tend to take printouts of research with me if I go to my GP for specific MS-related things, for that very reason! GPs by nature need to know a little about a lot and aren’t necessarily aware of the specific in’s and out’s of something like MS. Take stuff with you to back up your case! I’d even do the same with your MS nurse, as I know of of cases where even some neuros and MS nurses aren’t very bothered about vitamin D either :-O

October 18, 2011 at 5:34 pm #10790

Vitamin D cannot be prescribed on NHS, so if you’re going to take it you have to do so yourself. My GP recommended something called Sunvit. Google ‘Shine on Scotland’ for an inspiring story about a teenager and vitamin D!

I’ve known Vitamin D to be prescribed on the NHS but the recommended dosage is 400iu, which isn’t nearly enough usually. Whether or not a GP is willing to prescribe more is very hit and miss in my experience. I know some who have prescribed 10,000iu “hits” and then lower maintenance doses, while others just refuse to prescribe anything higher than 400iu. If you’re in an area where the injections are available, they seem to be mostly being kept for people who for one reason or another cannot go out in the sun, as there has been a problem with supply so they’re not readily available.
Mostly, it’s cheaper over the counter anyway, unless you get free prescriptions or do pre-payment certificates. However, if you’re going to buy it yourself, it would still be an idea to know what your levels are so you know how much to be taking – you need a doctor to help you with that!

There is a definite connection between the lack of Vit D and MS – that’s why the incidence rate is so high in Scotland and Northern Canada, lack of exposure to sunshine. There’s a doctor in America who gives this dosage to MS patients by injection and claims it works in reducing relapses. I believe it and definitely feel better when the weather is better. I have occasionally took supplements, but not that dosage. I try to get as much sunshine exposure when I can!

From my own experience with taking Cod Liver oil tablets (with vitamin D) or Fish Oil tablets (without vitamin D) and noticing the difference in my health I can definitely say there is a difference! My next test is to try taking two cod liver oil tablets per day!

anyone tried a light box as a source of vit D, i am wanting to buy one but not sure which an dhow long do you need to sit infront of it

October 21, 2009 at 2:43 pm #6611

I take vit D supplements i think it helps. Also with sunlight you only need about 20 mins of sun each day to get your dose. I have a light box and it definitely halps with SAD but I am not sure that it will give you your VitD dose as i think you may need UV possibly

Hi all. Does anyone take Vit D supplements? I’ve heard from another MSer that it has really helped them. It’s taking 5000iu’s worth per day which is way, way, way over the RDA. Thoughts? Ta, Kevin

I was recently told by a neurologist that taking Vitamin D was too late for me as I already have MS. Studies prove there is a connection – for example, those in Scotland are 10 times more likely to have MS than in Brazil. I don’t see the harm in taking it but I’m not sure there will be much to see according to this chap I saw.
